The Little Mermaid as Feminist?
Will the remake catch the wave of feminism? Casting has already shook things up by casting Queen Latifah as Ursula and Halle Bailey as Ariel. Nice snaps for diversity there Disney.
The original Little Mermaid movie was released in 1989 and even though it had a fresh feeling, it still had quite a ways to go to represent a woman as a strong, independent thinker. She did give up everything for her fella after all.
How will the story change now that the world has?
Below you’ll find a link to a great article that wonders how these changes could change the film and runs down a few old favorites like Sleeping Beauty. You’ll shake your head when you realize just how anti-feminist that 1959 movie really was.
If you love Disney – (or at least grew up on it) THis is a great read.
“I don’t think it’s unfair to say that Ariel really swam (then walked) so that Pocahontas, Mulan, Belle, Merida, Tiana, Moana, and future Disney princesses could run.”
