If you’re a feminist and have traveled far enough down the evolutionary road to understand white privilege, and you have it, it’s time for you to accept the responsibility that comes with it.
Sadly, oppressed peoples are rarely (if ever) freed on their own. They need an evolution of thought by historical oppressors to mainstream the concept.
So People of Color need white folks, women need men, immigrants need citizens, in this country those of the Jewish, Muslim and no faiths need Christians, and homosexuals need straight people to put them over the finish line to equality. Humans need humans.
But Wait a Minute….
It is also true that white folks need people of color. (Could we start following their voting advice please?) 97% of black women did NOT vote for Donald Trump. More of that please!
Women need men because the patriarchal systems are deep and wide. Without a few men on our side we won’t move the needle. (Sadly 51% of the population are women so you’d think we’d have it in the bag….but we can’t count on all of them to stand with us. How bout them apples? Can you say “Women for Trump?” I digress…..)
Citizens of the United States need immigrants because the diversity they bring makes us stronger as a country.
Non-Christian religions need christians to act christianly.
Straight people need homosexuals because love is love is love and the sooner we learn that the better we all will be.
White feminism vs POC feminism has been an age old struggle in the movement towards gender equality. You can take that back to the Susan B Anthony days. You can see it again in the wave in the 1960’s and 70’s. White feminist privilege has been with us for quite some time.
Many times white women would prefer to come in 2nd in privilege (under white men) than risk being 3rd behind men of color. And therein lies the struggle. It all stems from fear. Fear of being the one at the bottom of the apple barrell. No one wants that so the jockeying begins, the fractures fracture. We don’t stand together, and nothing gets done.
And here’s where the pie comes in
Gloria Steinem famously said, “Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It’s about making life more fair for women everywhere. It’s not about a piece of the existing pie; there are too many of us for that. It’s about baking a new pie.”
Get yourself a cup of tea, an open heart, and get ready for a fresh pie.
There’s a lot to chew on, accept and learn. Words that need to be said, and desperately need to be heard.
Click below for a great column written by a woman of color. Who tells us to listen, rise up, and join hands together. It’s the only way we will ALL achieve equality. Which kind of makes sense doesn’t it?
