Meghan Markle, Feminist Princess arrived in Cape Town South Africa earlier this week for a 10 day trip. Traveling with her prince of a husband Harry, and baby Archie, their first stop was to the Mbokodo Girls Empowerment Program.

It’s an organization that offers self-defense and empowerment to girls who have undergone severe trauma.

What you may not know (and what she is trying to draw attention to) is that South Africa has a huge and spiraling out of control problem with violence and crimes against women.

Their president is calling the struggle a war. Last year, 2700 women and 1,000 children were murdered by men. Over 100 rapes are reported daily.

South Africa has been called the rape capital of the world. 25% of men are said to have raped. 73% of those before they turned 20. Less than 1% of rapes are even reported.

This is the 25th largest country in the world and the 24th most populous with 56 million people. And violence against women is an epidemic.

Women in South Africa have been in the streets recently protesting and a state of emergency has been declared over the levels of crimes and violence against women. A national registry and the death penalty are being discussed.

The outlook is grim for many women in South Africa, especially those in historically vulnerable communities, unless major changes are made.

As a princess, Meghan, who has long been a feminist activist, has the tremendous gift to shine light on subjects. She did her job yesterday. Because here we are talking about it.

Read more here. about what’s happening in South Africa.

BUT. Hold up. Things aren’t so rosy here in the United States either.Let’s dabble in that world a tad.

RAINN.org (the largest anti-sexual violence organization in the United States) sums it up like this….

Every 73 seconds an American is sexually assaulted. And every 9 minutes, that victim is a child. Meanwhile, only 5 out of every 1,000 perpetrators will end up in prison.

DAMN. If you go to their website they have tons more stats that will really make you shake your head in disgust.

Back to South Africa…..

The Group Megan Markle went to visit the other day has a motto.

“waithint abafazi wathint’lmbokodo”.

This translates into “When you strike a woman, you strike a rock”.

We’re stronger than we know, and I’d like that motto on a T-shirt please. (but make sure they get the proceeds)
